Cradle Orion - The Only Plugin on Jaycen Joshua's Drum Bus
It is pre Black Friday seasion and a lot of developers are releasing new products. This week 16x Grammy-winning engineer Jaycen Joshua dropped his new plugin Orion together with The Cradle.
Orion is designed to replace JJ's complex plugin processing for his famous punchy and big low-end in this drum sound combining saturation, compression, and parallel processing into one streamlined tool. Orion aims to simplify his complex workflows with the same easy-to-use user interface as widely used The God Particle.
Orion consists of three sections: drive, harmonic eq and parallels. The drive section does the heavy lifting and is the core of Orion and the only activated section in Jaycen Joshua's default preset. It consists of four processors:
Color replaces the infamous 8 in-series Waves NLS Bus Channels and creates a psycho-acoustic effect through complex saturation that makes the low-end to appear bigger and punchier without increasing peak levels.
Harmonics replaces the Waves Renaissance Bass to generate harmonics targeted to a chosen fundamental frequency to make sub frequency content more audible on smaller speakers.
Compression replaces the Plugin Alliance Shadow Hills mastering compressor, which usually only adds a touch of compression and is more used a tone and saturation engine in JJ's template. The compression is used in parallel with a default of 90% wet signal.
Lift replaces the Plugin Alliance Black Box tube saturation plugin. Also used in parallel with a default of 80% wet signal, lift adds another stage of saturation and is boosting the high-end frequencies.
The harmonic eq section is basically a replacement for Wavesfactory Spectle and the parallel section consists of the famous aux channels in JJ's Pro-Tools template used to optimize very specific aspects of the drum sound. In total Orion is replacing 14 different plugins by different developers and a total of loaded 25 instances. No doubt Orion is much more user friendly and straight forward to set up than the original template.
In our very first YouTube video we compared the sound of Orion's drive section to the original template setup.
To make our own Orion, we put all the different plugins of the drive section as well as the harmonic eq in to the free Waves Studiorack plugin chainer. This allows to have a similar experience than with Orion by just loading one plugin and by having dedicated macro knobs for each section, making it easy to dial in the processors to taste.
