How Platinum-Certified Producer ASIDE Crafts Massive Choruses
ASIDE ( born in 1996 in Münster) is a German music producer and songwriter. He is notably co-responsible for the number-one hits "Auf & Ab" by Montez, and "Wildberry Lillet" by Nina Chuba. ASIDE has made a significant impact on the German music scene with his distinctive production style, contributing to the success of various artists across different genres. His ability to craft catchy, powerful choruses has earned him a reputation as one of the top producers in the industry.
In this interview, ASIDE shares 3 vocal production techniques that help you get your chorus to the next level!
" I always try to keep things simple and only do what is necessary to make the song shine. Here are some of the techniques I use to make my Choruses stand out a little bit more. "
1. VocalSynth
"This is my go-to vocoder setting. A vocoder layered under the main vocal can really give the hook a very big and modern feel. Especially if the artist is not particularly skilled with harmonies, it can make the small but crucial difference between a hook that lacks energy and one that opens up nicely. I use VocalSynth because it offers a large number of parameters, allowing me to fine-tune the sound I'm aiming for even further. With its versatile features, I can achieve the precise texture and depth needed to elevate the overall production quality."
"I apply this as an insert directly on the lead vocal and keep the amount around 10-30%. This is my favorite widening plugin because it sounds very transparent and doesn’t give that 'chorus' or 'unnatural' feeling that other wideners often produce. I also tend to make the chorus lead vocal slightly wider than the verse vocals to give the hook an even wider and bigger feel. This subtle difference can significantly enhance the impact of the chorus, making it stand out more and feel more dynamic compared to the verses."
"If I don't feel that the hook opens up enough, I copy the lead vocal onto two new channels and apply an AlterBoy instance to each copy. For one copy, I pitch it up an octave and apply a fully wet reverb. For the other, I pitch it down an octave and keep it completely dry. Then, I adjust both layers to fit the vibe of the song. Depending on how loud these layers are, the effect can range from barely noticeable—adding a subtle enhancement felt in the context of the entire song—to a distinct effect that gives the hook a modern and more processed feel. This technique allows for creative flexibility and can significantly impact the overall energy and texture of the track."
