Platinum-Certified Producer ASIDE shares his go-to Vocal Plugins

Platinum-Certified Producer ASIDE shares his go-to Vocal Plugins post image

ASIDE ( born in 1996 in Münster) is a German music producer and songwriter. He is notably co-responsible for the number-one hits "Auf & Ab" by Montez, and "Wildberry Lillet" by Nina Chuba. ASIDE has made a significant impact on the German music scene with his distinctive production style, contributing to the success of various artists across different genres. His ability to craft catchy, powerful choruses has earned him a reputation as one of the top producers in the industry.

In this interview, we talked about Aside's favorite vocal plugins and he gave us 3 recommendations for each category.

1. Pro-C

"I use the Pro-C mainly on vocals when I want transparent compression without any coloration. It is very easy to dial in with the auto release, and the visual feedback gives me a good idea of what exactly is getting compressed. I keep my ratio between 3:1 and 5:1 or use the vocal mode. Overall, it is a very solid choice for compression."

2. Virtual Mix Rack

"I use a variety of compressors from the Virtual Mix Rack. More often than not, I gravitate towards the FG-401. I love the color it adds. I tend to take about 2-3dB of gain reduction and then add some more gain on the way out for additional color."

3. Renaissance Vox

"A very popular choice. I think it's due to how easy it is to dial in and how great it sounds. It can really push the vocal into your face, and the gate is very effective if the recording has a lot of noise. You can even throw it on claps and hats sometimes, and it will do the job."

4. Pro-Q

"An absolute all-time favorite of almost everyone. The visual feedback, the intuitiveness, and features such as the frequency grab make this the go-to EQ for me and many others I work with."

5. Pultec Passive EQ Collection

"An absolute beast for adding warmth to a vocal or any other sound. Even the high-end boost is really smooth. I tend to boost the lows and attenuate at the same time. The same goes for the highs, with a sweet spot around 8k if I'm lacking highs in the vocal."

6. SSL 4000 E Channel Strip Collection APOLLO

"Although this is a channel strip, I mainly use the EQ here. I tend to dip some boxy frequencies around 300Hz and boost the top end around 8-10k."

7. Pro-DS

"This seems to be a common theme with FabFilter plugins, but this one is super easy to use when zeroing in on problem frequencies. Most of the time, the initial preset already does the job. I often use it twice in my vocal chain, with one instance working very broadly and the other very precisely."

8. FG-DS 902

"An absolute game changer. I don't think I know another de-esser that works as transparently as this one. I feel like you can take off as much as you want without getting that 'lisp' you often get with other de-essers. I cannot recommend it enough."

9. soothe2

"I put this in the de-esser category, although it is so much more than that. At the end of your vocal chain, this can really lock it in place! It is also amazing for sidechaining, as it lets you precisely pick the frequencies you want to sidechain, avoiding any unwanted 'pumping' effects."
